How corrosion inhibitors protect metal: synthesis in the lab and testing



Laboratory synthesis and systematic testing of a corrosion inhibitor commonly found in engine oils.  This inhibitor is the reaction product of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole and oleic acid.

  3. Hi Ben, i have been trying to replicate this synthesis but i get a much less viscous product. I use a hot plate stirrer with a similar setup you use (sand bath and glassware, argon flowing and water trap for exhaust gas). I keep it at 200 c for 23 hours with a pid controller, and i put in 2 to 1 molecular ratio as explained on the patent. Do you know why my product is much less viscous?
